NHTSA, a US Safety agency, says distracted driving is a leading cause of auto accidents – up to about 10%. Despite public service announcements and anti-texting campaigns, about 11 teenagers die every day in the US due to texting while driving.
Apple’s Do Not Disturb While Driving feature in iOS 11can detect when a person is driving. It automatically silences notifications to keep the screen dark.
One limitation of the feature is that it cannot distinguish between the driver and a passenger. This feature can be overridden. It remains to be seen how many users will choose to override it and text while driving anyway.
